Principles of Good Learning

“Learning is the difference between a job done and a job well done.”

  • Curiosity – we are not testing or judging them; we are learning from them
  • Neutrality – actively refuse to take sides
  • Observation – pay attention to body language, tone of voice, repetition or avoidance
  • Open Attitude – avoid assumptions, believe that anything is possible
  • Adaptability – be smart, focus on the goal more than following exact instructions
  • Communication – stay in touch with the team, don't let anyone worry about you
  • Sensitivity – be aware of power dynamics especially, don't abuse your privilege
  • Creativity – pay attention to unique attributes that help understand the interviewee better
  • Clarity – make sure the questions are clear; take the time to explain whenever necessary
  • Reflective – where are YOU in the conversation? Be aware of previous knowledge about the NGO and its members
  • Freshness – try to build on what you've been learning, but remember that each new interview is a new person
